Senate Bill 879, known as the  Pennsylvania Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, is going to the governor’s office for final approval. The bill mandates the Treasury Department to establish and maintain ABLE savings accounts for eligible individuals for payment of qualified disability expenses. The intent is to alleviate some of the financial challenges faced by families raising and caring for individuals with disabilities and would allow families to continue to receive essential services while planning for the future. Setting aside funds to overcome barriers or protection against serious setbacks would not be penalized or put current services at risk.
